The Newest Restaurant on Bowery: Espoleta
Latin cuisine lovers will want to take note that new kid on the (Bowery) block of restaurants is Espoleta, a quaint Mexican-influenced Spanish tapas restaurant and wine bar. The restaurant recently hosted its opening party with an intimate group of influencers to sample a selection of their small bites (parsnip croquettes with Mahon cheese, smoked paprika, and panko? Yes please.), classic paella, and red sangria. Restaurateur Giulio Adriani and consulting chef Sue Torres (who you may recognize for her part on Bravo’s Top Chef Masters) are to thank for the delectable offerings of classic Spanish dishes including pintxos and tapas, which can be enjoyed in a classy setting adorned with a mixture of brick and wooden shelving for its spirits.
Torres, whose ancestors migrated from Spain to Puerto Rico, shares, “Spanish food—small bites using fresh ingredients—is the way I want to enjoy life and eating… “It’s like you’re feeding someone’s soul when you serve them delicious Spanish food.” As part of this mantra, Torres makes the dishes truly feel like “at home” offerings by blending locally sourced ingredients from Union Square Greenmarket to create them.
Of note for foodies to try at Espoleta: pintxos of kabocha squash with mascarpone, leek confit and hazelnuts, and chorizo with organic Taza cinnamon chocolate. The salads and main plates packed with flavor include a shaved brussel sprout salad with honeycrisp apple, pomegranate, pecan, and citrus vinaigrette, along with a taramind-glazed hangar steak with celery root gratin for meatier fare.
Those familiar to this block on Bowery will remember that it is the former location of Neopolitan pizzeria Forcella (also run by Adriani). The champion pizzaiolo will be creating special fresh-baked flatbreads to complement Espoleta’s small plates menu.
Espoleta is located at 334 Bowery (near Bond Street), New York, NY 10012. Reservations online or by phone (212-466-3300).
