First Look: Designer Tina Huang First Collection
A California native has landed in our city bringing with her a fresh perspective of effortless style and sophistication that is sure to have NY socialites and fashionistas abuzz. The unassuming simplicity of a Tina Huang piece has touches of detail that only the fashion obsessed could truly understand. Her Spring/Summer 2011 collection shows promise; she is able to translate her love of art and nature into a collection that is comfortable without compromising luxury and femininity. Her pieces evoke an understated edge that brings intrigue to the woman it adorns.
Tina understands her client’s lifestyle so she knows the necessity of the wearer to be both stylish yet feel at ease in the garments. It is this awareness that influences Tina to go to great lengths to acquire premium fabrics, such as silk Crepe de chine, silk twill & fine silk jerseys. No detail is too small for this emerging designer as even the stitching on the necklines & seams are outlined with metallic lurex thread in a stitch that is typical in men’s t-shirts, which gives each piece a subtle twist to an otherwise feminine collection.
What’s most interesting about Tina Huang’s collection is her creative process as her appreciation of nature was cleverly reflected in this collection. As an avid traveller, she was most inspired by one of many visits to Hawaii, where she took amazing pictures of the sunset. Using the iPhone application called Pantone; Tina created five main hues which she applied to her color palette choice for this collection. The navy and mauve were the most striking selection as it complimented other intricate details such as the origami folds in many of the tanks & blouses. The art world also made an impression on Tina, as a visit to the Guggenheim last summer where the Kandinsky exhibit was displayed inspired the origami folds which are featured throughout her spring summer 2011 collection.
Although this is Tina’s first collection, she is no stranger to the fashion world. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge through working under noteworthy designers such as BCBG Max Azria, Derek Lam and Calvin Klein. Tina Huang has a very distinctive aesthetic, which when coupled with her natural ability of finding beauty in her surroundings, will translate into collections that will catch the attention of fashion’s toughest critic, including the most critical of them all, the finicky New Yorker.
