Hot! In Defense of the “Fat Ass” – or Filippa Hamilton

In Defense of the “Fat Ass” By Luisa Hassan.

So as many of you heard by now it was announced this week that Ralph Lauren model, Filippa Hamilton, was fired for being too “fat”. This after having a recent photo of her digitally altered to look thinner. She is 5’9” and weighs approximately 120 lbs.

Umm…..HELLO!!!! People, what kind of world are we living in when THAT is considered fat? So what are normal looking girls like me supposed to do, jump off a cliff because we don’t look anorexic? In a world where little girls as young as 5 are put on diets, is this really the look that we want to promote?

Yes, I understand that clothes look better for presentation on smaller frames, or so they say. Yes, I understand that obesity is an epidemic. I get all of that, but why are there people that look at me as fat because I am not a size 0? Sorry, but I like having breasts and a butt. Aren’t women supposed to look, well, feminine?

I remember a kinder, gentler fashion industry that welcomed the likes of Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, and Naomi Campbell with open arms. They are all about 5’9” and weigh about 120+ lbs. They were the “it” girls of fashion in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. Cindy Crawford was considered the most beautiful woman in the world. Linda Evangelista wouldn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day. Naomi Campbell was the first black model to grace the cover of the French edition of Vogue. Would they have made it as top models today?

As I munch on my morning donut and proudly wear my size 8 pants…..okay, they’re size 10 (I had a baby for God’s sake!); I can say that being “big” in this country seems to be a bigger faux pas than smoking. That seems hypocritical considering that the average American woman is a size 14.

What can we do about this? Well, we could write angry letters, protest, ban Ralph Lauren from our closets, etc. This won’t work though unless enough of us rally around the issue. I will wait for people to join me in this fight and pray that this sick view of women will change some day as I continue eating my donut and get through the work day.
