Nary Manivong Life Story Coming to a Theater Near You – “Dressed”
By Shantee Gordon
It’s a cool Autumn night in the meatpacking where everyone was abuzz with all Fashion Night Out festivities. However, I am skipping all the Fashion Night activities and head over to the Soho House for a sneak preview of the documentary entitled “Dressed.” I was excited to get out because this is my first official fashion week event.
The “Dressed” documentary features an up and coming fashion designer by the name of Nary Manivong and his struggle to make it in the often bitter world of fashion where “one day you’re in and the next day you’re out.” I entered the quaint theater and I immediately saw photographers taking pictures of the director, cast members and other important persons of the night.
I quickly settled into my seat as I awaited for the movie to begin. Interestingly enough, I sat next to Mr. Manivong, high school principal and his lovely wife. Both of whom were very personable and unsurprisingly expressed a deep sense of pride in Nary’s success. And, soon the lights went down and the movie began.
I was amazed and intrigued by this young man’s story. He over came many obsticales to reach the pinnicle of fashion and the threshold of his ultimate goal; becoming a well-known fashion designer. One thing that resonated with me was when someone stated Nary’s “spirit is his currency.” I found this statement profound because this young man had nothing at the time. He over came homelessness and with barely enough money to support himself or his dream still is finding a way to bring his dream into fruition. This combination of ambition and talent is making a place for him in the fashion world. The film shows a young man who was humbled and not broken by life’s struggles. Nary Manivong is a name everyone should know.
Director David Swajeski does an impressive job at showcasing Nary Manivong compelling and inspiring story. The movie is set to be released Spring 2010. As a note, “Dressed” is also set for educational tours in an effort to inspire new designers. For more information check out the website.
