Hot! KAWS at the Top of World

By Shaunya Hartley

What do you get when you mix an uber exclusive location with a world renown artist? A fête not to be missed, that’s what.  Last night, we headed to the Boom Boom Room where the glitterati of the art, fashion and entertainment world converged celebrate the recent collaboration of The Standard New York and KAWS’ Companion (Passing Through) exhibit.

Guest such as Gilles Bensimon, Annabelle Dexter- Jones, Craig McDean, Honor Fraser, AndrewAndrew, and Rufus Wainright, sipped on cocktails sponsored by Hennessey and danced the night away thanks to the tunes of Samantha Jones and Questlove; Both of whom shared the deejay booth and spinned classic tunes for the crowd of urban sophisticates.

Companion is the second collaboration between KAWS and The Standard New York.  Earlier this year, KAWS designed lightbulbs for The Standard which has since sold out. The current exhibit combines elements of pop, commercial and iconic imagery with a twist on the new millennium spectrum. Companion, like KAWS’ previous works highlight his time as an animator and graffiti artist and blurs the lines of art and mass merchandising.

Standing at sixteen feet tall, the painted fiberglass sculpture shows a keen resemblance to Mickey Mouse in a sitting position with gloved hands covering his face; a vast contradiction from the usual smiling character that the world has grown to love.  KAWS is known for taking well known animated figures and reworking them. The artistic manipulations of Sponge Bob and The Simpsons are some to note.
Companion (Passing Through) will be on display at The Standard until October where it will then tour noted galleries and museums to nationally.  Whether you’re a KAWS fan, a lover of iconic imagery gone bad or a voyeur still looking for the nude hotel guest , Companion (Passing Through) is worth the full on glance.
Companion (Passing Through) on view at The Standard New York now through October 2011 The Standard is located at 848 Washington Street in the Meat Packing District For more details on the artist KAWS visit his website www.kawsone.com
