Allison Widdecombe Shows the NYC How to Make The Best Manhattan
In the past Bourbon drinkers were often described as the “old boys.” However, that face of the Bourbon drinker is changing. Women, now represent 37 percent of whiskey imbibers in the U.S, according to Fred Minnick, author of Whiskey Women. So, its not entirely surprising that women are taking center stage in the industry. Case in point: bartender Allison Widdecombe of Williams & Graham, was crowned the winner of the Woodford Reserve competition for the Best Manhattan.
“I’m so honored to have been selected as the winner of this year’s Manhattan Experience,” she gushed. “The judges were looking for cocktails that encompass not just a great taste, but a great experience as well. To have been recognized by a brand as well respected as Woodford Reserve is truly amazing.” Allison, recipe “Proven Perfect” crowning recipe combined which featured alternative ingredients yet replicated the flavor profile of the classic Manhattan combined two ounces of Woodford Reserve with oolong tea-infused Ruby Port, cardamom-infused Amer Nouvelle, and just a little Fernet Branca. The result said, Woodford’s master distiller Chris Morris “Allison’s recipe was truly one of a kind, and we’re proud to name it as this year’s winner.”
As a winner Widdecombe will receive a feature on Liquor.com and a trip to San Francisco for a photo and video shoot that will air on Liquor.com
The event was held last Monday at The Bowery Hotel’s Bowery Terrace and featured the recipes of six semi-finalists chosen from select markets around the country. The contestants were judged by spirit notables: Charles Joly, Jacques Bezuidenhout and David Wondrich, along with Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris.
Here’s the winning recipe:
2 oz Woodford Reserve
.5 oz Oolong Tea-Infused Ruby Port
.5 oz Cardamom-Infused Amèr Nouvelle
.5 bar spoon of Fernet Branca
Combine ingredients over ice in mixing glass and stir. Strain them into a cocktail glass, and garnish with an expressed lemon twist.
