Lilly Ledbetter Honored at New York Women’s Agenda 20th Anniversary Celebration
New York Women’s Agenda recently held their 20th Anniversary celebration and commemoration of and late founder Elinor Guggenheimer’s 100th birthday at McGraw-Hill NYC in midtown Manhattan. Guests were welcomed into the elegant space with beautifully decorated tables of hor d’ oeuvres while the music of a jazz pianist set the mood for a festive evening.
Ladies and gentlemen donned in gowns and tuxedoes gathered in celebration of NYWA, a coalition of women professionals, community activists, and organizations, who advocate, collaborate and educate on behalf of New York women’s interests. Honoree for the evening was the notable Lilly Ledbetter, leader and advocate for equal pay for which the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was named. She received the Star Award for Advocacy, which was presented by human rights activist Kerry Kennedy.
We caught up with Karon Lilly, Connections Chair of the Tao Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, who was a Galaxy Award nominee for that evening, and asked her what the nomination meant to her.
All of our work that has been put into place with the board of registrations and the elections to make sure that people are informed and registered and are exercising their rights – and all of the work that we are doing is being acknowledged on today.
As Karon Lilly gathered with associates for press pictures, it was evident the sisterhood that an organization like NYWA creates encourages and fosters projects and initiatives like those led by Karon Lilly.
Linda Hartley, board member of NYWA stated,
In 2013, we will embark on our third decade to improve the economic status of women in New York. As soon as we take care of this, then we can go save the rest of the planet.”
