Backstage Beauty: Betsey Johnson Spring 2013
Betsey Johnson’s beauty look was all about drama with intense makeup, bold nails and rock-n-roll inspired hair.
John Reyman, Aveda’s lead hair stylist, told us the inspiration for the hair “was Betsey herself.” He, along with his team, “sizzled” the models with a hair crimper. Using Aveda’s control Force Hairspray, he kept the hair in place. The process, which lasted as much as 40 minutes, was repeated until the hair was perfectly stiff. Only when the models were ready to hit runway was tussled for a dramatic look reminiscent of 1980’s rock-n-roll video.
The hair was complemented by Maybelline’s lead makeup artist Gato, “Pin-ups and superheroes,” inspired by painted faces. “We wanted va va voom glamour red glittered nails to match the lips. We used red glittered lips in a previous show to reflect what is old is new again. Our models are wondermen,” Betsey shared. As a result the look was very whimsical and dramatic. Gato, created the look by using 24HR Color Tattoo on the lids. He also drew an aggressive eyebrow using Master Precise Liquid Ink Pen Eyeliner (black) and finished the eyes by using Falsies Flared Mascara on the lashes. To give models lovely rosy cheeks he used Dream Bouncy Blush (coral) and completed everything by adding the Very cherry Red lipstick with glitter!
The focus on the nails, was red as was with the makeup. To get the the desired nail look, lead manicurist, Gina Edwards of imPRESS, first applied imPRESS Press-On Manicure by Broadway Nails ($5.99). She filled the nail down and created an oval shaped tip which she then painted each imPRESS nail with ‘Ruby Kisses’. This created a retro feel nail and paired well with the makeup.
