New York Fashion Week may be over, but that doesn’t mean our coverage is. This season, get to know a little more about Yuliana Candra, CEO and San Francisco-based designer of BlacMéra. We caught up with her after she unveiled her Spring/Summer 2014 collection at Pier 59.

The Fabulous Report (TFR): Where did you find inspiration for this collection?
Yuliana Candra (YC): My collection is inspired by my personal travel (I’ve been to more than 40 countries in the last decade) and the rich, cultural history I experience at each destination. The prints from my ready-to-wear items this season are directly influenced by the photographs from my trips. For my haute couture dresses, I drew inspiration from Egypt and the beauty of ancient hieratic script.

TFR: Did you go anywhere fun this summer?
YC: We were recently in Las Vegas for WWD Magic so I had a hectic summer, preparing for Las Vegas and then New York three weeks later. I don’t think I did anything too fun this summer… I was in Indonesia and Europe earlier in the year though!

TFR: Let’s talk about back to school season. Do you remember your favorite first day of school outfit? If so what did you wear?
YC: Until I went to college, my schools always required uniforms, so I didn’t get the excitement of “what am I going to wear on the first day of school?” Nothing like that. When I got to college, jeans were definitely part of my prime clothing palette. One time, I had a bunch of old scarves and I decided to create a really giant poncho out of them. I was just experimenting but it turned out to be really cool.

TFR: Looking forward to the return of any shows?
YC: I watch a lot of Netflix. I actually haven’t had cable for a few years. When I watch shows, it’s always a little late. My guilty pleasure is watching anything to do with thrillers and murders. But I don’t like horror movies.

TFR: Lastly, what’s your favorite cocktail?
YC: I really like Hendricks Gin and cucumber. And martinis… all kinds of martinis – we tried some funky ones in Vegas!
