#NYFW: 60 Seconds with Jay Godfrey
In what felt like the blink of an eye, New York Fashion Week is upon us again! We got up close and personal with today’s established and emerging designers alike. See what Jay Godfrey had to say when we asked him about Spring 2015, in this season’s “60 Seconds” Q&A.
Jay Godfrey (JG): My style has always been clean, modern, with lots of color and an over arching sense of sensuality. The Jay Godfrey girl is evolving, while still staying true to her roots. You will see new fabrics – this is the first time I have used denim in a collection! This collection was inspired by rock ‘n’ rollers who infused country and western tones into their music in the late 60’s and early 70’s – it is a glamorous take on classic western Americana.
This season’s silhouettes are focused on longer lengths that are still body conscious. Fringed western and cropped tuxedo jackets, jacquard and lace tuxedo pants, bibbed shirting and ponchos are all fresh design elements incorporated throughout.
TFR: Speaking of designs–if you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
JG: Essentially what I wear every day – a black v-neck shirt, fitted blazer, skinny pants and sleek dress shoes.
TFR: What is the one beauty product you can’t live without?
JG: Osis hair cream.
TFR: Your favorite song of the moment?
JG: Loving Cup by the Rolling Stones.
TFR: Red or white wine?
TFR: How do you take your coffee?
JG: I’m obsessed with espresso torinesi at EATALY but when prepping for Fashion Week, I take my coffee any way I can get it!
TFR: What’s your guilty pleasure?
JG: The pork buns at Momofuku, they are the best! I probably eat there once a week.
TFR: Did you take a vacation this summer? If so where did you go?
JG: Yes, this summer my wife and our two daughters were able to visit Punta Mita in Mexico. We had an amazing time!
TRF: If you could design for a Disney character– which one would you choose?
JG: Elsa and Anna from Frozen – my daughters’ favorite movie!
TFR: What’s your favorite way to unwind?
JG: I love going down to Miami. It is such a quick flight and you don’t feel too far from the action that is New York. When I am in city I will go to the Graceful Spa on 14th and 7th or my wife and I will do pilates together at our home.
TFR: What’s your favorite restaurant?
JG: There are so many but Per Se is my go to. You can’t go wrong with anything on the pre fixe menu and the atmosphere is incredible.
TFR: How will you celebrate the completion of the show?
JG: With my family and team and a glass of champagne…or a few!
Jay Godfrey will present his spring collection on September 4th. Stay tuned for behind the scenes action and review of the collection. In meantime take a look at the designer inspiration sketches.
