Why I am Feeling Thorny For Wine
As someone who acquired a taste for fine wine while backpacking in South Africa’s Stellenbosch region and who has attended a lot of wine related celebrations, I am not often impressed by them. In fact – I find wine parties boring. Yet every so often, there’s a celebration that restores my faith in the wine cognoscenti. This is what happened at the pre-launch celebration for Thorny Rose, a new selection of wines owned by Constellation Wine including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Red Blends.
Held at LES hotspot Hotel Chantelle, the wall-to-wall affair packed with an eclectic mix of influencers including Tyler Boring Kelly Framel, Caroline Polachek and Patrick Wimberly, was unlike any wine launch celebration I’ve attended in recently. It featured a slew of adult fun filled activities– such as DIY bracelets; an onsite artist installation where an artist created a graffiti inspired mural bearing Thorny Rose elements; playing stations – think adults playing Jenga as they consume gratuitous amount of chardonnay; a generous selection of light and savory bites whipped together by Boring (he is a Top Chef after all) being passed around; and a musical selection from DJ Mia Moretti and Caitlin Moe, as well as the sounds of Brooklyn-based syntho-pop duo Chairlift.
The combination of wine and activities while a surprise to me, is part of Thorny Rose clever campaign. It’s not only social but also is “a new take on wine that invites you to celebrate the pre(party)” as well as a metaphor for life. One must assume the makers mean the good life which I fully support.
As for the wines with their “bright-fruit, refreshing, medium-bodied style,” are fairly good and giving their entry-level price ($10.99) you won’t go wrong bringing a bottle to your next party.
Speaking of parties, while I was sad to leave and didn’t walk away with a bottle (as I tweeted I would), I did walk away with a red-velvet ice cream sandwich wrapped in edible paper from the Coolhaus dessert truck parked outside and a big smile. Or maybe I was just “feelingthorny”? Either way that’s winning in my book.
