Assouline Celebrates “Escape Hotel Stories” by Francisca Mattéoli
Recently we attended a celebration of Assouline ‘s release of Escape Hotel Stories Retreat and Refuge in Nature by Francisca Mattéoli. This full color book of photographs details Mattéoli’s journeys to some of the world’s most amazing hotels, all of which possess an eco-friendly relationship with its surroundings. This allows for a unique experience rooted in a reverent connection with nature. Mattéoli explores fantastic destinations such as eco-lodges on Easter Island, a mountain ryokan in Japan, and luxury tents in the Australian desert.
“The idea was to do a book that could make all the readers feel connected with nature. There is a moment where we need to not only be connected with nature but with ourselves,” said Mattéoli.
This Chilean native born to a Scottish mother is an avid traveler who possesses a unique perspective on her many destinations across the globe.
“I feel that we are always fighting when we are in the city, on the subway. We have to fight when we go to shop…at our jobs, and I believe that with nature we don’t have to fight, because nature will always win.”
Mattéoli captivated attendees with her presence and her distinctive perspective. Escape Hotel Stories Retreat and Refuge in Nature sat in stacks on a center table where partygoers admired mesmerizing photographs throughout the book.
Guests mingled in the impressive but simple rock garden of Apartment 2E of the Andaz Hotel, a lovely space with an elegant bar and indoor space as well as a patio. Guests sipped from glasses filled with Russian Standard cocktails – elixirs of pomegranate and ginger.
