Fern Mallis interviews Tom Ford on Fashion and Film
Recently, Fern Mallis interviewed the gorgeous and pristine Tom Ford about his working relationships and artistic passions. In a delightfully comical and charming interview, Tom touches on career challenges such as his professional interactions with Yves Saint Laurent and Domenico De Sole.
“Yves was very friendly at first…As things started to go well and our success was going up and up, Yves was no longer my friend,” said Tom, comically recounting a famous quote by YSL:“In 13 minutes you destroyed what I’ve worked 40 years to create.”
The rocky professional relationship was well publicized in the press. Tom also spoke of an inspiring professional relationship with Dominico De Sole.
“Dom taught me one of the great great lessons. ‘Only hire people you want to have dinner with.’ If you’re like people, and you click, and you want the same things, and you think the same way, you’re going to work well together.”
He contrasts his work in the fast paced fashion industry with his work in film, where he found a freedom of artistic expression that differed from his fashion experiences.
“I was not trying to create a big box office hit. I wanted to make something personal that I loved that I didn’t compromise on and it was a very different type of expression,” he said of his critically acclaimed film A Single Man.
