Where to Eat AND Drink: Billet & Bellows
One stop off the L train, you’ll find a new neighborhood gem in Williamsburg in the form of Billet & Bellows. This newcomer offers the best of both worlds when it comes to liquid libations and savory bites. The food menu consists of small plates that put a playful twist on some classic American staples (think deviled eggs, grilled cheese, and potato skins). To wash those scrumptious bites down, you can choose from an array of specialty drinks with a sophisticated flair – each blending a variety of fresh juices and imaginative infusions.
Our favorite cocktail — hands down — was the meticulously made “Tongue & Groove” ($12), a blend of organic meyer lemon vodka, Lillet Blanc (um yes please), lemon, egg white, and delicate lavender petals floating atop the creation. To keep it short and sweet… it’s the classiest adult lemonade we’ve ever had. The aroma of the lavender added a nice finish.
We hesitate to call the small plates here “bar food” because they’re so much more than that. Thoughtfully created and flavorful, the Billet & Bellows bites make it hard for us to choose a favorite. The Deviled Eggs Benedict ($6) is simply addicting (it’s topped with ham and English muffin crumbs for crunch). For heartier fare, the Grilled Cheese ($10) with tomato soup jus is dripping in caramelized onion and gruyere goodness. Those with acquired taste should have no hesitation in enjoying the Chicken Liver Toast ($12) which is paired with a sweet chutney. Even something as seemingly basic as a soft pretzel has been elevated here, with the Jumbo Soft Hot Pretzel ($5) hitting the spot with a tasty whiskey mustard dipping sauce.
Billet & Bellows is located at 177 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211.
