A day at the races can be one of the biggest and fanciest days out of the year! Whether it be the Kentucky Derby, the Belmont Stakes or the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the dress code of horse racing often means that some of the best and most fashionable outfits can be found at these very events. So we’re examining some of the best fashion trends of S/S 2018 and what that we think could be cropping up, at this year’s festival. If these trends make a big splash at the festival, then they could be a big indicator of what is to come in summer fashion.

Boots

You would think that at an event like the races, high heels wouldn’t just be all the rage but a must-have item. We all know that stilettos are out right now, but at the races so are high heels! Boots are not only stylish but also the most practical option for an outdoor event. Not only will guests be on their feet all day but there’s also a danger of sinking into the ground. Many festivals not only don’t enforce high heels they actively recommend against them. And don’t be surprised if the boots on show this year are a little more colourful than usual. Red boots are one of the biggest new trends of spring 2018. Not only do these scarlet shoes look amazing, but they also make a statement that somehow manages to be bold but classy at the same time!

Tiny Sunglasses

One of the downsides of outdoor events is that the weather never is quite guaranteed. But even if the sun doesn’t make an appearance on race day, don’t be surprised if many are spotted wearing sunglasses to the races. Small sunglasses are a less practical but highly fashionable spring trend that is making the rounds, with many designers such as Rihanna’s Fenty, and Stella Mccartney are both currently getting in on this trend. And of course, we can’t forget that it’s the current favourite fashion accessory of Kim Kardashian by way of Kanye, who seems to be championing this particular trend.

Hats

At many race days, especially the more traditional ones we see taking place across the pond in the UK, hats are not only a fashionable accessory to an outfit, they are also a suggested addition. Racing festivals like the Cheltenham Festival, which is currently taking place, are a little bit infamous for the unique range of hats that are often on display. Luckily, this year hats are very in and in all shapes and sizes. Anything from sun hats to rain bonnets is currently very in fashion and the perfect piece to finish off an outfit, especially at the races. If you’re also considering betting on the horses, the current Cheltenham betting odds favour Might Bite at 4.1, but there are various different races to consider.

Gloves

Gloves are often associated with fancy events, so this trend is both a perfect and fashionable for an event like the Kentucky Derby or The Preakness Stakes. Matching gloves with the rest of an outfit is a simple and effective way of adding just a little bit extra magic to an ensemble. This trend is also another practical one, and will surely help attendees of races that take place in the more chilly months!

Bags

Bags are usually a necessity rather than a fashion item, but this season bags are in. Not just any bags either, but one of all shapes and sizes. However patterned bags, in particular, are the statement pieces of this year and are the perfect way for festival goers to stand out from the crowd.

So what do you think of this year’s fashion trends? And which trends are you hoping to see at this years’ races?
