Bibhu Mohapatra Launches Capsule Collection for Rent the Runway
Rent The Runway is expanding … again. In addition to improving sartorial choices of cash-strapped fashion types with their selection of well curated wares at wallet friendly prices from luxury companies, the company has teamed up with brands to create special capsule collections. Following their collaboration with DKNY, Rent The Runway has tapped designer Bibhu Mohapatra to create a special collection of dresses.
“They [ Rent The Runway] have been big supporters and fans,” Mohapatra told us at the launch party celebrating the collection. “We were in meeting. We just started talking about India. One thing lead to another and we just said lets go. We should just do it [creating the collection].” So they did. The “Indo-deco” collection is glamorous, sophisticated and perfect for just about any red-carpet worthy event. Naturally, given his background the collection takes inspiration from his native India.
“We went on trip to India,” he went on. “We did some research on the craft, the embroidery, the architecture, the colors, fabrics everything. I was primarily inspired by the deco influence of 1930s in the Indian art & craft and architecture. It was a very beautiful period that you can see passing through Bombay if you go in the old part of the city.” After the trip he just churned out a few sketches from his travels and created the beautiful dresses. He infused his heritage in a modern and a contemporary. The offerings include hand-woven fabrics, with intricate details and draping that is similar to those seen in saris.
The capsule collection ranges in rental price from $200-$400 and are currently available for rental.
