Get Ready Kids: Soon You’ll See High-Waist Jeans Everywhere
Trendsetters like Jessica Alba and Kim Kardashian, but most importantly young starlets like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Selena Gomez,(favorites among millennial) have slowly abandon their beloved skinny jeans for high waist jeans. This decision, as you would imagine, has created an appetite for the style among young shoppers. It turns out that this change among style makers has naturally created a trend.
However, unlike color denim which was popular recently, according to experts this is a trend that is here to stay. “Macro shifts, in contrast, are further reaching, much longer in duration, and serve as catalysts for complete wardrobe turnover,” details a Goldman Sachs trend report. “They are slower to take hold, since they create an entirely new shape on the human form and at first look odd or off-balance. However, once in motion, macro shifts can catalyze a powerful product cycle that creates both opportunity and risk for key competitors.”
Though high-rise denim, which shorten the torso and amplify the bottom, is not popular at the moment, the silhouette is expected to become a go to style for women but in particular for young shoppers. This “macro” shift has created a paradigm shift for retailers. In fact Susan Kellogg, the VF president who oversees 7 for All Mankind, Splendid and Ella Moss, said on the company’s Feb. 14 earnings call, explains that high-rise denim is “the biggest trend for spring,” and she went on “It hits the millennials because it’s cool and new and it hits the little bit older customer who just needs more coverage. So whenever a trend like that is so commercial it means money.”
Naturally, retailers like rue21 which cater to young shoppers are rushing to create styles and are adding additional sku to satisfy the appetite for the style. And soon, you’ll them everywhere as you do with skinny jeans. Now, it begs the question–are you excited to try new trend? Or, are you hoping that it quietly goes away like color denim? For the record, we are happy to see a new silhouette besides skinny jeans to enter the market.
