Hot! Beauty Q&A: What Exactly is a Beauty Balm or BB Cream?

If you stroll down a beauty counter, you might have noticed that Beauty Balms or BB creams (as they are most often called) are taking more shelve space. Now, the important question (from readers): What exactly are BB creams and What do they do?

Many readers, are not exactly informed on BB creams. Many have sent questions asking whether they should incorporate the creams into their beauty routine. So, to get the answers we’ve asked a beauty expert. Lisa Bensley, a makeup artist and beauty blogger (BeautybyBenz.com), gives us the scoop. Here’s what she had to say:

“BB” stands for Beauty Balm.  You can think of it as the middle ground between a lightweight tinted moisturizer and a full-coverage foundation, but with more skincare benefits.  They’re really concentrated, so a little goes a long way.  With continued use, your skin should be healthier and have a more even tone.  They also have SPF in them, so you can think of them as an all-in-one beauty treatment, instead of having to layer on SPF, serum, and foundation.  It really helps if you’re crunched for time in the morning.  But you should still use your moisturizer underneath!  There will never be anything in your routine that can replace a good moisturizer.
The market is getting kind of saturated with BB creams, which can get confusing to the customer, but I have some favorites.  Garnier’s BB Cream is surprisingly awesome for something that is so affordable, and they have a version for people with oily skin that just came out.  Too Faced is a favorite of mine because they have a nice range of shades to choose from, unlike a lot of brands out there that still only make one shade.  Keep your eyes out for new Bronzing Beauty Balms coming out this summer, like the Stila 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm that’s already in stores.  Trust me, you won’t believe how glowy your skin can be this coming summer!”
